Our story

The Hotel Veter is located away from the hustle and bustle of the city, right at the foot of Pohorje.

In the once industrial town of Ruše, only 9 kilometres away from Maribor, a plan for the development of tourism was formed years ago. Natural conditions, the proximity of Pohorje forests, ski resorts, and the Drava River have contributed to the accelerated construction of tourist infrastructure.
In 2008, the plans were realized with the construction and opening of the first accommodation establishment in Ruše, the three-star Hotel Veter and the Vetrnica youth hostel.

The Hotel Veter is perfectly located, a step away from the hustle and bustle of the city, yet still at the foot of Pohorje, not far from the new Pisker II ski resort with a new 6-seater chairlift.

The Hotel Veter got its name from the natural characteristics of the place in which it is located, the constant blowing of the northwest wind, which is a constant in weather forecasts.

The name “Veter” was also used as a synonym for movement, dynamics, as the Hotel Veter is a kind of foundation for the development of tourism in the municipality of Ruše, the driving force for the future.

With the new accommodation facility, the municipality of Ruše, which also includes the Areh ski resort with its new Pisker II piste, acquired 150 beds for guests of various types. You will be able to choose between accommodation in one of 37 double rooms, a youth hostel or one of five high-quality suites.

The special feature of the hotel is that it is adapted to its target groups.

Thus, among the double rooms we find rooms for athletes and rooms for business guests, in the youth hostel Vetrnica all young travellers, families and those who don’t want to lack comfort despite the favourable price find their accommodation; while apartments are suitable for those who want prestige and remoteness.

Offer of the town and its surroundings

The municipality of Ruše is located in the western part of Styria at the foot of Pohorje, 13km west of Maribor. The average altitude of the municipality is 309m. The highest part of the municipality is Žigartov vrh (1347m above sea level). To the north it extends to the Drava River, while to the south it meets the slopes of eastern Pohorje, made of tonalite and other igneous rocks.

In Ruše, besides the numerous sports activities, you can also attend cultural events or international sports competitions.

Ruše Sports Park offers its visitors:

Nature and its treasures

In the embrace of two mighty wooded hills, Pohorje and Kozjak, along an important watercourse, the Drava River, and a few minutes from the hustle and bustle of the city… you will find an excellent starting point for discovering Pohorje forests, hiking trails, ski trails, and stories and tales. Visit the tops of Kozjak, get to know river animals and plants – CATCH YOUR BREATH UNDER POHORJE!

Our most priced natural possession is Pohorje that with its forests and various possibilities of sports activities invites you into its embrace. You can discover Pohorje in the winter, on skis, sleds or on foot, and in the summer, it offers an excellent shelter from the heat with cycling and hiking trails. Numerous natural sights are waiting for you, you can discover them by yourself or accompanied by experienced guides.

Pohorje

Pohorje is a mountain range located in north-eastern Slovenia and is mostly overgrown with coniferous forests. It stretches between the Drava River in the north and the Drava-Ptuj plain in the south. In the west it reaches Dravograd and in the east stretches to Maribor.

The heart of Pohorje is a plateau with many marshes. The area is bordered by a ring of tops consisting of Žigartov vrh (1347m), Klopni vrh (1340m), Rogla (1517m), and Veliki vrh (1344m).

Šumik Forest

Along the Lobnica stream there is a large area of untouched Pohorje primeval forest, where you can find mighty old trees, such as: beech, spruce, fir, and rare plant habitats. After a short descent along Lobnica, you will reach the Veliki Šumik waterfall, one of Slovenia’s most powerful waterfalls, and a little further on Mali Šumik. The path between Veliki Šumik and Mali Šumik is considered to be very demanding.

How to reach the Pohorje primeval forest:
From our hotel you drive in the direction of the centre of Ruše towards Smolnik. Two kilometres on, behind the road section towards Gornjak, there is a signpost for the waterfalls to the left of the road. Continue along the marked path from the Šumik plain or near Bajgot, where there is also a pleasant outpost at the confluence of the Črnava and Majland streams, from which the Lobnica stream emerges. The primeval forest is only half an hour away. Don’t forget appropriate footwear and warm clothing!

Other natural sights that you can discover during your visit: the Lobnica gorge and the Mali Šumik and Veliki Šumik waterfalls. With the height of 24m, the latter is Slovenia’s largest waterfall on a non-carbonate base and also the highest waterfall in the Drava river basin. You might also enjoy:

  • Vernski slap waterfall,
  • puddles under Žigartov vrh,
  • false cliffs,
  • the park at the Fala manor,
  • the park near the church in the centre of Ruše,
  • Stanije’s park plantation and tree-lined avenue in Ruše,
  • tree-lined avenue and black walnut below Glažuta at Smolnik,
  • yew habitats in Log,
  • individual famous trees such as yews, lindens, spruces, beeches, chestnuts (Jurša’s yew in Log, Podlesnik’s chestnut, and Črnko’s apple trees).
